Among the reptilian species turtles are one of the oldest in the world whose origin goes back to millions of earth years. Recently however the turtles are much in demand as people have started to bring them home as pets. Children especially find turtles to be very attractive to have as pets. Though turtles are comparatively easier to keep than other types of pets caring for turtles is extremely important for the well being of the pet so that they do not die an untimely death.

There are number of species of turtles which can be kept as pets. The turtle care would revolve around the variety you have brought home. Turtles live mostly in water as well as on land for example Musk turtle and red eared slider uses both for habitation. Box turtles on the other hand live only on land.

Living area

It has been noticed that most people get those variety of turtles which live both in water and land. To accommodate such a variety many people prefer to recreate the natural habitat of the turtle while keeping it indoors. Getting a tank would be the first step towards caring of turtles. A 20 gallon tank for the baby and a 40 gallon tank when it grows up should be sufficient. The tank area has to be divided into land and water area as the turtle would need both to survive in a healthy atmosphere. There should be rocks put for the turtle to climb up and bask. For basking purpose lamps of 80 degree temperature should be fixed for daytime and 70 degree for night time.

Turtle food

Diet is another part of turtle care. A baby turtle should be fed berries, insects, tomatoes, mushrooms, lettuce, bananas, worms and fish. A turtle should be given food which is rich in nutrient such as vegetable and fruits, fish, crickets etc.

Clean living area

One of the most important steps in caring for turtles is to keep its living area clean. The turtle should be given spring water to drink. The tank water should be de-chlorinated if you are using tap water. The water will become messy everyday and would be contaminated by messy eating habit of the turtle. It is essential to filter the water daily. The unclean water could lead to some disease for the turtle. The surrounding land area as well as the water should be cleaned and food particles and feces removed daily. For turtle care its body should be cleaned as there might be food particles sticking to its body.

Have a happy turtle

Turtle care also involves washing your hand thoroughly when you handle your pet. Though it is an attractive idea to let your turtle play with the kids but not a wise one as turtles removed from their natural surrounding created by you may fall sick. Turtles are by nature intelligent creatures and they have absolute understanding to know when they are being neglected and when they are loved and cared for. Make it happy while caring for turtles and you will see the result. If the turtle is happy it will be active and healthy which is joyful for you and your family as long as it lives.
